Welcome to English 1!
English 1 is build to be a world study of reading and writing in order to prepare the student for college and career readiness. In this survey we will read, write, create, think, debate, and much more.
English Sequence for the Year:
First Six Weeks - Reading and Writing - Personal Narrative - In this unit we will explore personal interests and experiences in a way to motivate our own personal story telling. We will explore Literary Nonfiction as mentor texts to help us learn great strategies and techniques.
Second Six Weeks - Non- Fiction - Using informational and persuasive texts, we will explore popular topics like the Mars One Mission and Urban Legends to explore gathering main ideas, summaries, inferential thinking and problem solving.
Third Six Weeks - Fiction in Short Stories - Edgar Allan Poe, "The Most Dangerous Game," and so much more. We'll examine plot and conlfict as well as all the elements that make short stories dynamic.
Fourth Six Weeks - Poetry and the Epic Quest - Using songs and The Odyssey, we will explore poetic devices and what makes language poetic.
Fifth Six Weeks - Novel Study - Night - The holocaust memoir by Elie Wiesel that discusses the truly harrowing life in the Nazi concentration camps.
Sixth Six Weeks - Dramatic Study - Romeo and Juliet - Shakespeare said it best, "All the world's a stage" and using his classic story of love and death, we will make real world connections to classic literature.
