The Kerrville ISD Band Program is founded on the philosophy that music is an essential component in the enrichment of the educational experience. The multidimensional thinking involved in grasping the harmonic and temporal concepts of music touch the most basic preconscious structures of the mind. The disciplines involved in the study of music demand mastery of the highest levels of intellect, memory, concentration, and emotions as well as the finest tuning of coordination and sensory awareness. The study of music is where students may learn commitment to quality and excellence in their work and where they can explore the inseparable relationship to mind and body. Whether it is on the concert stage, the football field, the rehearsal hall, or the academic classroom, ultimately, we want every student to become the best person he/she can possibly be.

“Strive for excellence in all that you do”

Tivy Drum Major Awarded Performing Arts Scholarship

Senior band member and second year drum major Paul Bennight received a $2,000 scholarship form the Kerrville Performing Arts Society (KPAS).

According to KPAS Education/Scholarship Chair, Lorna Auld, eleven students from the surrounding Hill Country applied for three scholarships, all created for students pursuing a career in the performing arts.  Applicants were required to complete the application letter, have two letters of recommendation, including one from their music instructor, and audition in front of three performing arts professionals.

Bennight has applied to both Texas Lutheran University and Texas State University to pursue a degree in music education, with plans to become a band director.  He auditioned for the KPAS scholarship playing the Alto Saxophone.  An accomplished musician, he has been selected to perform three times with the All-Region and All-Area Bands.  He is a TMEA Music Scholar and has received numerous 1st Division ratings in solo and ensemble competitions at the regional and state level.

KISD congratulates Bennight and additionally applauds KPAS for the outreach programs created for students.  KPAS has assisted the district by funding concerts, offering opportunities for students to perform pre-concert in the lobby of the Cailloux Theater prior to evening concerts, and offered thousands of complimentary tickets from season ticket holders willing to let students attend performances they cannot attend.

For additional information, call the KPAS Message Line at 830-896-5727 or visit their website at www.kpas.org.
