LIBRARY |
Books
generate excitement, whether it’s Fairy Tale Jazz Chants,
Stories to Solve, The World’s Best String Games with
our fingers all tied up in strings, or just simply discovering
good books together.
We hear “read it again” often. Starkey students
love books!
The smells and the sounds of literature from other countries
often emanate from the library. We have learned that
one can go anywhere in a book. The library occasionally
comes alive with Bookie Bookworm, Mother Goose, Amelia
Bedelia and other imaginary book characters.
The Book Fair, Magazine Subscription Drive, and the PTO-sponsored
Birthday Book Club are important fundraisers for the library.
The library also promotes the school-wide Accelerated Reader
program and introduces many of the books available, encouraging
students to participate. |
ART |
Each
Starkey student attends art class for 50 minutes each week.
This block of time gives the children the opportunity to experience
many wonderful and expressive art techniques. All students
experience different painting and drawing materials and methods
including pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, pastels, oil pastels,
markers, watercolor, tempera, acrylic, and computer graphics. Students
also experience three-dimensional mediums which include kiln-fired
clay, glazing techniques, and paper maché.
Students in all grade levels are exposed to many great
works of art and learn about the artists who created them. We
use the laser disc and computer to access many of the images
that are contained in the National Gallery of Art in Washington,
D.C. and the Louvre in Paris.
Starkey students also hold their own art show for parents
and the community.
“Gallery Night” is held in May. Each
student exhibits one piece of art work. Music and
refreshments are provided during this evening event. |
MUSIC |
Starkey
students attend music class once or twice a week, depending
on the grade level. The Kodaly vocal approach used
in KISD is founded upon teaching the elements of music through
the use of folk songs.
Not only do the children learn and experience music, but in
doing so, they also learn and experience the varied ethnic
heritage of the peoples that comprise the United States.
Elements in the music curriculum include: the music
and lives of famous composers, folk dancing, singing, performing,
reading music, creating music, improvisation, playing instruments,
music appreciation, and music history.
Starkey Singers is an honors choir for fourth and fifth
graders which rehearses after school twice a week and performs
often at Starkey and in the community. |
PHYSICAL
EDUCATION |
Physical
Education (P.E.) strives to educate the whole child with
a program centered on helping students understand the correlation
between academic achievement and physical wellness, and why
the two are crucially important to each other.
Students are given
the structure and freedom to explore their potential in
a non-competitive environment. This environment naturally
instills and nurtures self-confidence, self-worth, and
a pride in doing one’s best for the simple reward
of satisfaction and self-preservation.
Field Day, held
in the fall, pairs students of different grade levels in
events designed with teamwork in mind. Through the
discovery of the strengths of their teammates, students learn
to appreciate their own unique abilities. |
