DEVELOPMENT OF A PARENT INVOLVEMENT POLICY

Policy:

The Kerrville ISD Board of Education recognizes that the successful education of a child is the shared responsibility of the school and family.  In order to support the goal of the district to educate all students effectively and enhance student performance,  the schools and parents must collaborate as knowledgeable partners.

While parents are diverse in culture, language, and needs, they share the school’s commitment to the educational success of their children.  Kerrville ISD and it’s campuses act as a team with parents in instituting programs and practices that increase parent involvement and replicate precise needs of students and their families.

Thus,  the Board encourages the development, implementation, and recurrent evaluation of a parent involvement program in each school, which will involve parents at all grade levels.  The parent involvement programs will be comprehensive and coordinated to ensure district-wide participation.  They will include, but not be limited to, the following components of successful involvement programs:

  • Communication between home and school is the foundation.  It occurs on a regular basis, is two-way, and meaningful.
  • Responsible parenting is promoted and supported.
  • Parents are the first educator and play an integral part in assisting student learning in school.
  • Parents are welcome in the school, and their support and assistance are sought.
  • Parents are full partners in the decisions that affect children and families.
  • Community resources are made available to strengthen school programs, family practices, and student learning.

The Kerrville ISD Board of Education supports professional development opportunities for staff members to enhance understanding of effective parent involvement strategies.  Additionally,  it is vital that administrative leadership set clear expectations for creating a climate conducive to enhancing parental participation, not only at the campus level, but also at the district level.  The participation of parents in the decisions and practices of the school district allows for shared ownership in the educational process and evaluation of outcomes.  Therefore,  Kerrville ISD shall foster and support active parental involvement.
