Property taxes in Texas are assessed as of January 1st each year and cover a period of one year from the date. Tax statutes make no provisions for proration; therefore, a change of address during the year would have no effect on the tax liability established on January 1st of the calendar year. These tax statutes also make no provision for proration in case the property is disposed of during the calendar year. Also, if you owned personal property described on the tax statement on January 1st, then you are personally liable for the taxes.
IF YOU ARE 65 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER OR ARE DISABLED, AND YOU OCCUPY THE PROPERTY DESCRIBED IN YOUR TAX DOCUMENT AS YOUR RESIDENCE HOMESTEAD, YOU SHOULD CONTACT THE APPRAISAL DISTRICT REGARDING ANY ENTITLEMENT YOU MAY HAVE TO A POSTPONEMENT IN THE PAYMENT OF THESE TAXES.
Taxpayers who were 65 years of age or older, or disabled on January 1st of a tax year and have filed an application for exemption may pay the taxes on the HOMESTEAD in four equal installments. Contact your Tax Office for more information.
Please remember when mailing in your tax payment to reference your Property ID Number on your check. The tax office is happy to return a receipt with a pre-paid envelope included in your payment.
DISTRICT HOSTS RETIREMENT RECEPTION
Irene Kaiser has served the Kerrville Independent School District (KISD) in the tax office for 37 years. Kaiser will officially retire as the Deputy Tax Collector on Tuesday, September 27th, and the district is hosting a reception in her honor for family, friends, and the many businesses she has worked with for nearly four decades.
Says Kaiser, “I’ve worked in the KISD tax office for half of my lifetime. I’ll miss waiting on the customers and working with the KISD staff. Everyone I’ve worked with over the years has become like family.”
Kaiser began her service to the district in November of 1974. When the tax office opened on Earl Garrett, she would welcome customers, direct them to the tax collectors, and answer phones. Over the years she has grown the position to prepare tax certificates for abstract companies, handle the daily deposits, assist attorneys on legal matters, continually answer the phones, and step in when needed in any other area.
In her 37 years in the KISD Tax Office, Irene has acquired many great memories, formed strong relationships within the community, and can tell dozens of great stories. We invite you to visit with Irene at a reception in her honor on Tuesday, September 27th, at KISD’s Central Office Board Room. The reception will be held from 4-6PM and light refreshments will be served.
