First Annual "Battle of the Books"!

In an effort to motivate Starkey students to turn off their electronic devices and read, Librarian Mary Lynn Hopkins and 5th grade Reading teacher Mrs. Peggy Matthews created “Battle of the Books.”   The students were able to sign up to be on one of seven teams.  The children read from a selection of sixteen books, such as Sing Down the Moon, Firegirl, and The Breadwinner.  Working with their teammates, students prepared for the preliminary “Battle”, which took place on May 16, 2012 in the Starkey Library.  Moderators asked each team a series of comprehension questions covering all sixteen titles, awarding the teams points for correct answers.

The winners of the preliminary battle were Team Extreme, Team Mustache, and Team Dynamite.  These three teams will move to the final round of competition on May 30, 2012, Reading Celebration Day.  Trophies and individual medals will be awarded to the winning team.

The “Battle of the Books” was so successful that Starkey students have voted to start a new tradition and make the “Battle of the Books” an annual event.
