MAKING THE SWITCH
KISD Replaces Gym Bulbs for Efficiency

gamel_web.jpgNine gymnasiums in Kerrville ISD will feature energy efficient T5 light fixtures.  In September, the administration applied for a U.S. Department of Energy Grant through the State Energy Conservation Office of the State Comptroller in order to replace the lighting in the district’s main gymnasiums.  The grant was awarded for $35,000 to assist with the cost of the project estimated at $71,000.

According to KISD’s Director of Maintenance and Operations, Don May, the new energy efficient fixtures should offer a significant reduction in the use of electricity which could result in the district recouping the initial costs of the lights within one and a half to two years.

The new light fixtures have been fully installed at the elementary and middle school gymnasiums leaving only Tivy High School on the list.  KISD crews are scheduled to replace existing bulbs with the light fixtures in Tivy’s gyms in June.

KISD Maintenance and Operations Bring Christmas to Kerr County Families in Need

toydrivePicnikThanks to the efforts of the KISD Maintenance and Operations Department, hundreds of Kerr County children will receive gifts, food, and clothing this holiday season.

For the second consecutive year, the department has partnered with the Kerr County Sheriff's Department, and now Any Baby Can, to collect toys, blankets, clothing, and food for families in need this Christmas.  KISD maintenance staff build huge wooden boxes and delivered them to every KISD campus so that students, families, and community  members could easily drop off donations for the past two weeks.

On Tuesday, December 14th, bins filled with requested items and five bicycles were presented to the Sheriff's Department and Any Baby Can for distribution.

KISD is proud of the generous efforts of the Maintenance Department and we thank all of the families that donated items to this worthy cause.

If you would like to know more about the toy drive, contact Betty Rector, KISD Maintenance Department, (830)257-2216, ext. 221.

CAUGHT AT WORK

Frank_web.jpgFrank Santagata was caught at Central Office working on the beautiful antique clock he has faithfully restored.  The 1912 clock is the original clock students in the 1900's counted on seeing and hearing throughout the school day.  Sitting still for many years, Santagata fixed the clock in the summer of 2009 and Central Office staff and visitors have delighted in seeing it working and hearing it "tick tock" throughout the day.  This Tivy treasure is well cared for by Santagata who takes pride in creating fixtures for the future and preserving pieces of the past.
