Nimitz News
Ann Fritz of Mini Mart presented Wade Ivy, principal of Nimitz Elementary School, with a check for $500. For the second year in a row, Mini Mart has secured a grant from the Exxon Mobil Educational Alliance on behalf of Nimitz Elementary. The money will be used to purchase resources and materials designed to increase student engagement in the math and science classrooms.
140 Nimitz students brought their parents and family members with them to Family Math Night on Tuesday, January 10. Teachers had a wide variety of fun and engaging math activites set up for all to enjoy. Thanks to our teachers, students and familys for making the evening a success.
Nimitz students had the opportunity to give rather than receive while they shopped at the Holiday store the week before Christmas Break. Using keys earned for hard work and good deeds in the classroom, students had a wide selection of gift items they could buy for family and friends. Money to buy the Holiday Store items was donated by the Nimitz PTO.
On Tuesday, December 13, the second grade class along with the Nimitz Honor Choir performed Christmas themed songs to a crowd of thrilled parents and family. Dressed in red, white, and black, the students looked visually stunning with choreography and all. Their musical performance was outstanding as well with the highlight being the Honor Choir's performane of The Nutcracker.
The Honor Choir consists of 4th and 5th graders who demonstrate vocal skill and a desire to work hard to improve their natural musical abilities. The Nimitz Honor Choir is directed by Mrs. Alysse O'Brien.
Nimitz teachers and staff had a surprise when they came to work on Friday. A team of PTO volunteers spent Thursday afternoon and evening cleaning out cabinets, hanging decorative items, and replacing furniture for the new look. Nancy Freedle, PTO Hospitality Chairperson, led a group of dedicated parents in the design and set up of the new space. Gloria Edmonds, Kari Potter, and Cristy Jackson assisted with cleaning and set up. Ed and Lisa Casals refinished an existing cabinet and were there to set up the room after it had been cleaned. Tammy Wren contributed her photography to help decorate the room.
Special thanks go to Rick's Furniture and Moore's Home Furnishings for the donation of the new furniture. Thanks also to Barbara Collins of B+ Jewelry Designs for the donation of two microwave ovens.
Students and staff have been engaged in a number of activities which have ranged from educational to fun to even ridiculous. We will start with educational.
5th Grade students had the honor and pleasure of listening to Nancy Clayton tell Civil War Era stories and perform drum cadences that were used around army camps and during battles. Mrs. Clayton visits Nimitz every year to bring history to life for our students.
The first grade teachers hosted a Family Christmas Party on Tuesday, November 29. Participants made crafts together, had snacks, and even had an opportunity to talk about school related topics such as how to help their children with homework. It was a successful evening of fun and learning.
Fifth Grade Admirals and student leaders participated in the KISD Youth Leadership Conference at Tivy High School on Wednesday, November 30. Students from all four elementary campuses heard presentations by local community leaders which focused on the 6 pillars of character and how leaders exemplify those traits. The six pillars are Trustworthy, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.
The Nimitz Orchestra performed to their families and friends the evening of Thursday, December 8. They showed their skill by playing some of the major scales and even some simple songs. The finale was their rendition of Jingle Bells. Jessica Lee is the director of the Nimitz Orchestra.
Nimitz Family Science Night was held on Monday, December 2 in the cafeteria and gym. Teachers set up grade appropriate labs that had students and their parents explore life, earth, and physical sciences. Members of the Tivy High School Chemistry class performed experiments that showcased chemical reactions, while representatives from the Upper Guadalupe River Authority talked about water testing. Scientists from the Knipling Bushland U.S. Livestock Insects Research Laboratory showcased specimens of insects, and biology students from Schreiner University had skeletons of various animals to identify based on specific traits.
We will end with the ridiculous and fun. Each year, the school is divided into two teams representing the principal and assistant principal. The team that raises the most money from raffle ticket sales is the winner. Principal Wade Ivy's team lost this year which resulted in him performing as Justin Bieber in front of the entire school.

The good news is that the entire student body sold over $12,000 of raffle tickets, which earned them an All School Party. Students were treated to snacks, movies, and performances from singer Tony Gallucci, and trick roper Kevin Fitzpatrick. All of the money raised from raffle and Fall Carnival will benefit the students and faculty of Nimitz Elementary School.

The Texas Education Agency released it final accountability ratings for districts and campuses across the state. Not only was our Exemplary rating confirmed, but we also received notification that Nimitz earned Gold Performance Acknowledgements in all TAKS tested subjects, Reading, Math, Writing and Science. Gold Performance Acknowledgements are based on the percentage of students who score at the commended performance level on their TAKS tests. This marks the second year in a row that Nimitz has earned acknowledgements in all four tested subjects.

The City of Kerrville Fire Department was at Nimitz on Wednesday, October 12, but it wasn't to respond to an emergency. They were on campus for fire prevention day, a yearly event that gives students the chance to interact with our local firefighters. Students learned about fire prevention, safety, and the proper actions to take in the event of a fire.
Nimitz Elementary School has been named a 2011 Texas Business Education Coalition (TBEC) Honor Roll School for the 3rd year in a row, and the 5th time in the organization’s 12 year history. 253 schools made the TBEC list representing less than 4% of the over 8000 public schools in Texas. The TBEC Honor Roll recognizes schools for academic performance, and honors those students, teachers, principals, and superintendents who have won their championships in the classroom.
To be honored, schools must demonstrate three years of consistent, high performance in all subjects compared to other schools serving similar student populations. TBEC Honor Roll schools have the highest percentage of students performing at the state’s most rigorous standard, commended, in every subject. In this, the last year for using the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) performance data, TBEC’s standards were the toughest in the 12 year history of the award.
The most prestigious and demanding academic award a Texas public school can receive is to be listed on the annual TBEC Honor Roll. Congratulations to our students and faculty!
Go to http://tbec.org/honor-roll for more information about TBEC and the Honor Roll Award.
This spring, Texas school children will no longer be taking the TAKS test. Instead, they will face the STAAR test for the first time. The newly designed exam will test 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Reading and Math, 4th grade Writing, and 5th grade Science. In addition, school accountability ratings will still be determined in large part to student performance on the tests. Major changes include a four hour time limit for testing, and two days of testing for the 4th grade Writing test. For more information, please click on the STAAR logo.
