TROXELL NOMINATED FOR “SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR” |
Sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), the SOTY award honors outstanding Texas administrators for achievement and excellence in public school administration. Candidates are selected for their strong leadership skills, dedication to improving the quality in their school districts, commitment to public support and involvement in education, and ability to build good employee relations among teachers and staff members. This is the second year in a row that the Board of Trustees has nominated Dr. Troxell for this award. Says KISD Board President Gary Miears, Sr., “Dr. Troxell embodies all the qualities of an outstanding educator, administrator, and individual. The KISD Board wholeheartedly endorses his nomination and hopes his achievements will be further recognized at a state level through this award. We feel fortunate to have him leading our schools and impacting not only our community, but the entire Hill Country.” Dr. Troxell was hired by the Board in 2003. Over the past four years, Dr. Troxell has provided the service leadership that has led to significant improvements in academic programs, the completion of numerous building programs, and sound fiscal management. The district, students, staff, and campuses have earned multiple national and state awards during the past four years. Successes include, but are not limited to, the newly constructed Tivy High School which earned the prestigious 2005 Caudill Award for Educational Design, Tally Elementary School earning distinction as the sole elementary school in Texas to be named a 2006 National Title I Distinguished School, and several district recognition. Recently, KISD was featured in the February 2007 issue of the American Association of School Administrators publication, “The School Administrator.” In the magazine, Dr. Troxell and the district were noted by the National Association of Gifted Children for innovative programs developed specifically for our gifted and talented students. Additionally, KISD received its fourth consecutive “Superior Achievement” rating for impeccable financial reporting under Dr. Troxell’s tenure. Prior to his arrival in the Kerrville Independent School District, Dr. Troxell served as an assistant superintendent in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD in suburban Houston. He earned a Bachelor of Arts with honors degree, and subsequently a Ph.D., from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Troxell also holds a Masters of Education degree from Texas State University in San Marcos. He has been a middle school teacher, middle and high school assistant principal, and high school principal. Dr. Troxell serves on the Texas Association of School Administrators Legislative Committee, the Texas Association of School Boards Risk Management Committee, and the Commissioner of Education Committee for Gifted and Talented Education. In 2006, Dr. Troxell named the Regional Advocate of the Year for Region 20 by the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented. Says Troxell, “I am honored to represent Kerrville ISD and extremely humbled by the Board’s endorsement. As a dedicated team of eight individuals, it is our cooperative spirit and firm belief that together, we can meet the educational needs of all children and staff. That is what drives us daily and inspires us to serve in this capacity, whether as a Superintendent or Board Member volunteering his or her time. To be nominated for an award of this magnitude is indeed an honor.” Twenty regional education service center winners from across the state will be announced in August. Troxell’s nomination will be submitted to Region 20. From there, five state finalists from the pool of nominees will be selected and interviewed. The winner will be announced in September and presented the award at the 2007 Texas Association of School Board(TASB)/Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) Annual Conference.
