Community Leaders Speak To 6th Grade GT Students |
||
For release Feb 9, 2006
Mark Cowden, President of Security State Bank, spoke on February 9 to David Gray's gifted & talented students at B.T. Wilson 6th Grade. Cowden told students about how banks work, including lessons on simple and compound interest. Gray regularly brings in outside speakers as a way to supplement the curriculum and build bridges between the school and community. "I believe for students to understand math or any academic subjects, real life situations finish the equation," said Gray, who notes that sixth grade is a turning point for many students deciding on their future education. "Having a professional explain how they use math makes the students realize the importance of an education. Bringing in a person from the community lets them see what we are doing in the public school system. It also lets them understand what teachers are doing to make this a better community." Other presenters include a homebuilder discussing blueprints, a superintendent covering school finance, and a mayor sharing community issues.
