Understanding the Assessment

TAKS Test:

1.      Which TEKS/SE's are assessed?

2.      At what level are the questions asked?

3.      Which formats are used to ask the questions

All other assessments:

1.      What is measured?

2.      What is our process for reporting?

 

Analyze TAKS Data

1.      Based upon the data, teachers identify the TEKS/SE's that need improvement.

2.      TAKS results are analyzed by TEKS/SE from the weakest to the strongest performance. 

3.       An Item Analysis of each TAKS Release Test is completed by each grade level/department in all core subject areas..

4.      Causal factors for low-success-rate test items are identified.

5.      Strategies for improvement are identified.

 

Plan Instructional Sequence

1.      TAKS analysis data is used to determine the time allocations for improvement of identified Targets.

2.      A calendar of instruction (scope & sequence) is established based upon inclusion of TAKS targets in the curriculum.

3.      A timeline for mastery of each TEKS/SE and an assessment calendar is created

Plan Assessment Calendar

Checkpoints (few TAKS objectives assessed at a time) 

Benchmarks (entire Release Test)

1.      With the principal’s input, the campus grade levels/ departments schedule the administrations of Checkpoint and Benchmark Tests at opportune times prior to the official TAKS administration. 

2.      The Student Assessment Coordinator, based upon the campus grade level/department calendar of assessment, provides the tests, scans student answer sheets.  Using the AEIS-IT system, the coordinator provides to teachers and their principals test data in various modes of analysis.  

  Assessment Schedule:

·         Grade 1:  One District-developed math and reading TAKS-like test is given in May.

·         Grade 2:  Two District-developed math and reading TAKS-like tests are administered, one in February and one in May.

·         Grades 3-8:  A combination of Checkpoints and two - three Benchmarks are given prior to the official TAKS in math, reading, writing, social studies, and science.

·         Grades 3, 5, 6, 7, and 9:  TAKS-like Written Composition assessment is administered in May.  Paired-scoring sessions are scheduled in May. Results are shared with teachers, principals, the curriculum director, and the superintendent.

 

Monitoring

1.      Instructional Team Meetings - Grade levels/departments meet with the principal to analyze Checkpoint and Benchmark results and to develop plans to address both individual student and class-wide weaknesses.

2.      Principals monitor to ensure implementation of these plans.
