Career and Technology

The Advanced Academics Department includes programs designed to enrich the state curriculum for gifted and high ability students, and to provide opportunities for continued growth after high school for all students, whether planning to attend college or join the work force following graduation.

KISD serves students identified as gifted at every grade level. Gifted students are served through a wide array of options including cluster grouping and pull out services. On the elementary campuses, gifted students are cluster grouped with a G/T trained teacher in all core content areas. The Challenge Labs provide “the next step after mastery” with activities and projects for gifted and high ability students. Community Problem Solvers, a division of the Texas Future Problem Solvers,  is an extra curricular creative thinking program offered to fifth graders.

In grades 6-8, HORIZONS classes offer an enriched and/or accelerated curriculum that prepares gifted and high achieving students for advanced classes in high school. Destination Imagination is offered as an extra curricular creative problem solving program for students in grades 6-12.

Advanced academics in high school include dual credit classes and AP classes, both which provide the opportunity to earn college credit. In addition, the high school offers a wide range of course through the Career and Technology department that prepare students for the world of work.

KISD STUDENT WINS SUMMER SCHOLARSHIP FROM
GIFTED AND TALENTED ASSOCIATION

Kerrville ISD 5th grader, Curtis Forster, from Tom Daniels Elementary School is the recipient of a summer program scholarship from the Texas Association for the Gifted & Talented (TAGT).  TAGT Summer Scholarships are designed for those gifted and talented students who wish to attend academic or artistic programs during the summer months. Gifted students, grades K-12, may apply for scholarships of up to $400.

Only 62 students received awards out of 288 applicants.  Forster plans to use his scholarship to attend the Aquatic Science Adventure Camp at Texas State University in San Marcos.

The Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented (TAGT) provides educational services for educators and parents who are dedicated to meeting the unique social, emotional, and intellectual needs of gifted and talented students.  The association has awarded over $800,000 to students, educators, and parents since 1988.
