Welcome to Starkey Elementary School!

Diane Stern
Diane Stern,
Principal

Starkey Elementary School is a warm, caring place where children feel good about themselves as learners.  While our primary focus is to provide a strong academic foundation, we still find time for such enrichment activities as our Family Reading Nights, Science Expo, Challenge lab, music programs, Field Day, Gallery Night, and other special activities that encourage the students’ interests and talents.

Established in 1948, Starkey has a rich tradition of academic excellence.  Dedicated teachers and staff work together to ensure that every student has the opportunity to be successful.  Parents are urged to become involved in our school; our Parent/Teacher Organization offers many opportunities for volunteer service.

We recognize that the school, home, and community must work cooperatively to meet the varied needs of our children.  Our goal is to inspire a lifelong love of learning in every student who enters our school.

You are welcome to visit us at any time.

Students in Sharie Miller's 1st grade class adopted a Marine this year and the day finally arrived for them to meet him in person. Corporal Chad Austgen visited Starkey Elementary on May 16th and sat with the students who have been mailing him cards, care packages, and sending photos throughout the year. The students cheered him when he walked in the door and presented him with handmade cards. After asking him dozens of questions about Iraq he posed for a class photo and enjoyed refreshments.

Starkey fifth grader Gavin Friedman is student by day and naval sea cadet on the weekends. During a recent classroom show and tell, Gavin shared with students in Bruce Kryzer's and Hollis Uecker's fifth grade classes of his adventures in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet program, a program for 11-13 year olds out of Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. Says Naval Officer Ens. Bill Olson from the program, "If you like to run, hike, swim, and interested in water survival techniques, this program is for you!! It is also about leadership and teamwork and build on the principals of the U.S. Navy." Gavin spends one weekend per month on base where he joins other young boys and girls in training from the area. For more information on the program, visit www.seacadets.com.

STARKEY STROLLERS

Students at Starkey Elementary School participating in the Starkey Strollers program are one step ahead in the mornings. Awake and ready to go, students that spend time walking or running in the morning, instead of sitting around waiting for the bell to ring, will tell you that they feel more alert, enjoy the time to talk to their friends as they pace around the track, and have more energy throughout the day.

The Starkey Strollers program was created to offer students an opportunity to walk or run the track before school. Teachers volunteer their mornings to supervise and mark cards measuring the strollers distances. On average, 45-55 students stroll each morning. Students are rewarded when they reach a half-marathon (13.1 miles) and again when they reach a full marathon (26.2 miles). Additional prizes will be handed out to the top strollers at the end-of-year awards.

Students can walk between 7:15 - 7:45 a.m. Third, fourth, and fifth grade students can stroll on Mondays and Fridays. Kinder, Transitional, first, and second grade students can stroll on Wednesdays.

The first two students to reach a full marathon during Starkey Strollers are Fisher Diharce and Ryan Robertson. (Pictured - Diharce, Assistant Principal Brad Harvey, Robertson)
