Advanced choir members at HPMS and BTW participated in a Solo and Ensemble Festival on Thursday, Jan. 30th.

Performing solos or duets for a guest judge/professional vocalist, students used this opportunity as a practice for UIL High School competitions. Says Choir Director Karen Billingsley, "When our choir students enter high school, they are able to compete in UIL for solo or ensembles. My goal was to give our sixth grade and junior high students the experience of performing solo or duo before they reach high school and officially compete. This in-house experience offered them a chance to perform and our judge not only gave them a rating but offered important constructive comments to help them improve their performances. I was very proud of everyone that performed!"

Water Drop Off Stations Set Up Valentine’s Week

The HPMS PTO is collecting bottled water for all students during TAKS test season.  If you can donate packages or cases of bottled water, drop them off at the front office or deliver them when you deliver your child.  Volunteers will be on-hand Feb. 11th – 15th at student drop-off and pick-up areas at the back of the school to take your water from your car and bring inside the school.  Plain, non-flavored water is preferred and all donations help HPMS students during TAKS test days.  If you have questions, contact Principal Sharon Mock, 257-2204.

Texas Star Jacy Rogers knows firsthand that it is better to give than receive.

In an effort to give back to her community, Jacy organized a stuffed toy drive at her school. With the help of her reading teacher, Paula Mitchell, she printed a flyer to post around the school calling for students to bring gently used or new stuffed toys to school. Jacy plans to deliver the toys to the Kerrville Police Department before the Christmas holidays. Shares Jacy, "My mom taught me that we should give back to our community instead of always taking. When I thought about how I could give back I realized that I could give away some of my stuffed animals, since I had so many, and I thought other kids at my school might want to do the same. My teachers and my classmates helped me organize this project and now I have boxfuls of stuffed toys that will make other kids feel better over the holidays."

For more information, contact Paula Mitchell, HPMS, 257-2204.

HPMS Super Spellers Tom Turney, David Gregory, and former Peterson teacher Lissa Peters participated in the Alpha Omega Spelling bee. Their entry fee of $500 was raised by students in the National Honor Society.

Seventh grade students on the Texas Stars team participated in interdisciplinary activities tied into lessons on Texas Antiquities.

The concept of having all subjects work together under one theme or lesson translated to learning made fun in the great outdoors. Math lessons were paired with reading as kids had to read word problems and apply math skills to reach one point of the campus to another. Much like a treasure hunt, string in hand and specific measurements and directions to follow, they were ultimately guided to the tennis courts if solved correctly. Science classes became an archeological dig for bones and arrowheads and other hidden treasures and students then had to plot and graph the location where their treasure was found. Social studies lessons included poems and plays and recitations on the Caddo Indians or early settlers in Texas and students were offered tiles on the art building in a part English/part art lesson on pictographs.
