Imagine feeding 4,000 hungry kids breakfast and lunch.

Now imagine doing it every day.

That's what the 40 people do in the Kerrville ISD Child Nutrition Department.

A typical meal might call for 2600 hamburger buns, or 162 pounds of cheese. In one month kids will down more than 52,000 cartons of milk.

We buy only Grade A fruits and vegetables, and use standardized recipes to yield consistent quality. We consistently earn the highest sanitation scores in town, and all staff are trained in proper and safe food handling.

We follow nutritional guidelines imposed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, financial guidelines from the Texas Education Agency, plus sanitary regulations from the health department.

The Nutrition Department earns all the money in its budget. This is done from student and adult charges, along with federal reimbursement for free and reduced price meals.

And always, our primary focus is on pleasing our most demanding customers - the students who use our food as fuel for growing, learning, and imagining the future.

KISD CHILD NUTRITION DEPARTMENT WINS MULTIPLE AWARDS

Kerrville ISD's Child Nutrition Department received multiple awards at the 54th Annual Conference of the Texas Association for School Nutrition (TASN) held June 8-11th in Corpus Christi.  Under the direction of Debbie Baerwald, the district food service department was awarded a certificate for increasing breakfast participation by 12% and a certificate for the large number of food service staff who serve as members in the association.  Individual honors included the President's Gold Plan of Action Award to Tivy High School (THS) staff member Valeria Smith, Area 1 Chapter President, for completing designated items in the TASN strategic plan.  THS staff member Imelda Navarro was named KISD's "School Nutrition Specialist of the Year."

Lisa Winters, Public and Media Relations Specialist, was selected by TASN as the state-wide winner of the Nutrition Education Award in recognition for outstanding nutrition education outside food service.  Winters received a plaque at the annual conference in recognition of her year-long campaign to assist the food service staff with publicity, marketing, promotions, and for her overall support locally and regionally.
