Career Connections will give students the opportunity to explore the world of work. Students will analyze the effect of personal interests and aptitudes upon educational and career planning. They will then locate, analyze, and apply career information to their specific career choice using a career planning process. Locating and securing employment will also be discussed, as well as interviewing, job applications, and resumes. Students will recognize the impact of career choices on personal lifestyles by completing a personal budget. Goal-setting, decision-making, and productive work habits will be emphasized. Keyboarding prepares students to operate the keyboard by touch and begin development of acceptable speed and accuracy levels. Keyboarding class introduces proper formatting of documents for personal and business use and gives opportunities for students to apply their keyboarding skills in “real life” situations. Keyboarding prepares students to operate the keyboard by touch and begin development of acceptable speed and accuracy levels. The purpose of the keyboarding class is to teach the “touch” keyboarding skill, proper formatting of documents for personal and business use and give opportunities for students to apply their keyboarding skills in “real life” situations. Students use word processing application tools to provide information used in making decisions. |

Recordkeeping develops skills in everyday business activities at home and at work. Elements include personal record keeping (working with banking records, budgeting, and credit), business record keeping (working with sales tax, petty cash, and spreadsheets), and applied business records (sales, deposits, inventory, accounts payable, payroll, and tax records). The accounting section includes journals and ledger accounts, posting, special journals, accounts receivable and payable, and financial statements. Each major section throughout the course is followed by applications of the principles learned with a special project or simulation. |

Accounting I introduces students to accounting concepts, principles, and procedures and increases their business vocabulary. Activities include working with journals, ledgers, work sheets, and financial statements for a proprietorship and partnership. Automated accounting is introduced through computer problems and spreadsheets are introduced through LOTUS 1-2-3. |

This portfolio-based,
personal development course will provide students with the opportunity
to discover how personal qualities relate to successful performance.
Students will create a portfolio that represents their abilities and
accomplishments. The portfolio is designed to showcase special talents
and to disclose eligibility for college admission, scholarships, or other
programs and work readiness. Throughout the course the KAPLAN test prep (SAT/ACT) system (tailored to each individual student) will be utilized. Based on the first diagnostic exam, the program prepares a learning plan and calendar for each student. The adaptive curriculum focuses on each student’s areas of strengths and weaknesses and provides a skill-building sequence to maximize learning and score results. Students have only one opportunity to make a good impression. In Marketing Yourself / Test Prep, students will learn how they can affect what they become. Students will be prepared to put their best foot forward as they get ready to venture into a job or college. |

A high score on the PSAT can improve chances for scholarships and awards in the junior year of high school, including National Merit Scholar. The 10th grade year will be used to prepare students for the 11th grade October testing of the PSAT. Preparation for parenting is a laboratory course that focuses on parent education. Students may expect to acquire background knowledge needed for effective parenting. The development of the child is included. The content emphasizes special parenting needs and/or situations such as single parenting, step parenting, children in crises, and parenting techniques in lesson planning and preparation. Students have hands-on experience with children in off-campus observations of preschool as well as in-class observations of children in the Tivy Child Development Center. Students also have the opportunity to mentor at-risk students at local elementary schools and become a Head Start volunteer. This course is ideal for anyone choosing early childhood or elementary education as a career. This course is paired with Child Development. |

Child development is a laboratory course that provides content for students to acquire knowledge and skill related to the development and care of children. HSTE l is an opportunity for students to observe and participate in daily activities in various medical facilities. Three days will be spent at the medical facility and two days will be spent in the classroom. Some can be customized for individual special interests. |

The course is organized as a pre-employment shop program for carpentry. Throughout the pre-employment training, the student will be able to (1) use manipulative skills needed for successful completion of jobs in the field of carpentry, (2) apply the related information necessary to assure sound decisions, sound judgment, and proper procedures involved in carpentry, and (3) show desirable attitudes, habits, standards of workmanship, cleanliness, and safety. |

This course is contracted through the cooperation of the Kerrville Independent School District, Texas Education Agency, and Conlee’s College of Cosmetology. Cosmetology is a two-year program. Students will be expected to train through the junior or senior years with such training leading to licensing by the State Board. Although there is no charge for the course, students must furnish uniforms, work kits, licenses, and state testing fees for a total of $213.50 (both Cosmetology 1 & 2). The curriculum covers all areas of cosmetology pertaining to hair, skin, cutting hair, tinting, iron curling, blow waving, braiding, salesmanship, shop management, etc. Each student enters into district competition on a voluntary basis. District winners may go as high as state finals. Interested students must check with the counselor before enrolling. Students may not enroll unless they can receive at least one full year of training before completing their high school education. Class meets both semesters. |

To be in this class, each week a student must tape an after-school, evening, or weekend activity. Students who show motivation and ability will be allowed to work directly with the TV broadcast programs. |

This course is designed to provide instruction, on-the-job training, and work experience for students preparing to enter employment in occupations related to the field of Home Economics. HECP provides students with one hour of individual and group instruction each school day. Group instruction includes developing an awareness of employment opportunities in the chosen field, evaluating opportunities for business ownership, developing leaders and effective group members, developing a successful life management system, and becoming a successful employee. Approved occupations include: child care aide, clothing assistant, floral designer, dietetic aide, food service employee, home furnishings aide, home management assistant, fashion coordinator, custodial services, and hospitality employee. Students attend school in the morning, take regular academic courses in HECP class, and work a minimum of 15 hours per week in a related field. |

Health Science Technology Education is an elective instructional program for eligible juniors and seniors. It is designed to train persons to assist or support the functions of the licensed or certified health practitioner. The curriculum includes concepts and skills necessary for successful employment practice in a health care specialty, and in specific occupations taught at training stations. Students will be employed a minimum of 15 hours per week in a health related field. Activities of HOSA ( Health Occupations Students of America) are an integral part of the instructional program and stress occupational and leadership skills. Students are expected to be active in HOSA. The local chapter provides programs and activities to help individuals develop their physical, mental and social well being. Members strengthen their leadership and citizenship abilities through interaction with professional, business, and student organizations. |

Marketing Education Career Preparation emphasizes the development of decision-making skills so that students understand the impact of management-oriented challenges. Students study levels of management, their functions and duties, and styles of management. Students earn 1 credit based on the classroom instruction. Students earn 2 credits if they add an internship component to the course. Interns will shadow managers from various occupations and industries in our business community on a rotation basis. Students may earn 3 credits if they choose to add a work-based component of at least 15 hours of training per week in an approved, marketing-based business. |

This course is a Career and Technology program for students interested in developing skills for industrial occupations such as auto repair, electrical, carpentry, heating and air conditioning and other industrial trades. The program is a cooperative arrangement between the school and local businesses. The student attends school for a partial day and works a minimum of 15 hours per week in a related occupation. |
