Emergency Closing Procedure

When inclement weather or other adverse conditions are predicted, school administrators will travel bus routes in all parts of the district beginning at 3:00 a.m.  The Superintendent and Director of Transportation will determine whether conditions are too hazardous for bus transportation.

Should classes be cancelled, all area media will be contacted by 5:00 a.m.  KISD families can listen for announcements on school closures at the following media outlets:

School closures will be posted by 5:00 a.m. on the district web site at www.kerrvilleisd.net.

PLEASE NOTE: Media outlets only inform viewers and listeners of those school districts that are either starting late or canceling school.  If no information is given, KISD will be starting at the regular time, on a regular schedule.

Parents: Most schools and departments have only one or two phone lines.  If schools are in session and the weather is getting bad, it is important that we are able to keep them open for emergencies.  Parents are encouraged to listen to public announcements rather than to call individual campus offices or the transportation department.

Be assured that the decision to close school is a very important one and is made only after thorough consideration.  KISD closely monitors weather reports on the major television and radio stations and we are in contact with the local law enforcement as needed.  Other conditions such as heating capabilities may influence the decision.  The safety of our students and staff is our most major concern at all times.  If/when the Superintendent makes the decision to close schools, all notifications procedures are put into place beginning at 5:00 a.m.

Here are some suggested guidelines to follow:

  • Assume that school will open as usual.
  • Check with the media outlets listed above for information or instruction.
  • If schools close, the school day must be made up on one of the designated Bad Weather Make-Up days listed on the official school calendar.
  • Parents are instructed to listen for media broadcasts of school closures.  In order to keep campus or department phone lines open for emergencies, please do not call individual campuses or the Department of Transportation.
